In September last year, Joe Biden administration started removing patriot missile defense systems from Saudi Arabia despite Saudi Arabia plea to US not to remove them due to constant ballistic missile and drone threats from Iran-backed Houthis militias in Yemen where Saudi Arabia and its allies have been fighting a war since 2015.
The removal of patriot missile defense systems from gulf countries come at time when US and NATO troops left Afghanistan in a chaotic and humiliating way after spending 20 years fighting the Taliban and trying to build a democratic country out Afghanistan.
At time US should that it was ending Afghanistan war inorder to shift resources and help in containment of China’s rise in Indo Pacific region where China out-march US in terms of over all military capabilities including economic strength. This move didn’t sit well with gulf states which saw it as US abandoning them after abandoning Afghanistan.
For Saudi Arabia, three US presidents starting from Obama to Trump and then Biden have been practicing a policy of abandonment. The head of Saudi Arabia intelligence linked to the removal of patriot missile defense systems from Saudi Arabia to its worsening relationship with US but US secretary of defense denied such remarks saying that the removal of patriot missile defense systems is aimed to focus on growing military capabilities of both Russia and China.
Operating patriot missile defense systems is not cheap and Saudi Arabia has paid a lot just to intercept Houthis ballistic missiles attack on the kingdom, the Patriot missile defense systems use two missile interceptors to destroy one missile fired by Iran-backed Houthis militias and one missile interceptor costs 3 million dollars. The constant ballistic missiles and drone attack on Saudi Arabia rised the cost of war in Yemen.
The relations between Saudi Arabia and US worsened after Joe Biden administration come to office. Joe Biden administration accuse Saudi Arabia crown Prince of ordering the killing of Saudi Arabia journalist Jamal khashoggi when he was lured to building consulate in Turkey on pretext of providing with him papers for upcoming wedding before he was ambushed, suffocated and his body dismembered by 15 member squad of Saudi Arabia assassins.
After Joe Biden come to office, he refused to call Saudi Arabia leaders even though Trump made Saudi Arabia its first foreign trip after coming to power in 2016. The refusal to contact Saudi Arabia leaders due to the killing of Jamal khashoggi has worsened the relations between Saudi Arabia and US and Saudi Arabia had started shifting its priorities to building a new relations with China including reports that Saudi Arabia maybe willing to accept Chinese Yuan as payment for its oil which is a big threat to US Petro dollar system.
Joe Biden wasn’t willing to give in even though Saudi Arabia had started looking East to China but the war in Ukrain has forced Joe Biden to rethink his approach to Saudi Arabia and gulf countries in general as its not only Saudi Arabia shifting from US camp to China but also UAE after suspending US arms deal to the gulf state worth more than 23 billion dollars.
When Russia declared the start of military operation in Ukraine, oil and gas prices skyrocketed to 120 dollars a barrel of oil causing the cost of transport and manufacturing to increase which inturn increased inflation in US to 8%. The increased inflation in US has greatly affected its economy and new projections don’t give goods news for US economy in this year.
Saudi Arabia is also among countries which have refused to impose sanctions on Russia and also declare that the Russia’s military operation in Ukraine is an invasion. Saudi Arabia also refused Joe Biden calls to increase oil out put in order to bring down oil prices.
Few days ago, UK prime minister Boris Johnson visited the King Dom after MBS refused to take Joe Biden call to talk about the increase in oil out put but Boris Johnson never gave us the answer as to whether Saudi Arabia has changed its mind about pumping more oil to mitigate rising oil prices.
So the reported redeployment of patriot missile defense systems to Saudi Arabia may have been one of conditions Saudi Arabia set to start increasing oil out put per day. It remains to be seen which other conditions Saudi Arabia might have demanded from Joe Biden.
The relations between Saudi Arabia and US has not been good due to the killing of Jamal khashoggi but what is surprising is that UK prime minister Boris Johnson visited Saudi Arabia after it beheaded 83 people in one day. US also said nothing about the issue which is hypocrisy of highest order since Joe Biden administration fronts human rights and democracy as the corner Stone for US relations with other countries.
The war in Ukarine has opened many people’s eyes and have started seeing correctly the hypocrisy associated with US and its allies when it comes to International issues and has confirmed that US will always fight for its interests first.
