At the beginning of the crisis, president Zelensky of Ukraine was always told that the west was with him but the problem is that he failed to understand that Ukraine was in dispute with a military superpower country”Russia” not a small country.
He failed to understand that no country in the world at this point would want to go directly to war with Russia because of its military strength in order to defend Ukraine which honestly many people in the world, especially in the US, couldn’t locate on the map.
Yes, the US-led west said that they were with Ukraine but I think what president Zelensky didn’t ask was “to what extent and what help can I get if things get worse”. For economic sanctions, they take time to bring results and by then the country called Ukraine may no longer be in existence which means they may not save Ukraine at its worst moment.
President Zelensky of Ukraine said sadly on day two of the Russian military operation, “I asked them, are you with us? They answered that they were with us, but they didn’t want to take us into the alliance. I have asked 27 leaders of Europe if Ukraine will be in NATO, I have asked them directly- all of them are afraid and didn’t respond”.
What is interesting is that president Joe Biden of the US has been telling the whole world that the US will not send soldiers into Ukraine to fight Russia fearing the consequences of such action would be catastrophic to the whole world but interestingly, many people including president Zelensky had hoped that may be if the war starts, the US may get involved, drawing in other NATO members to help.
Zelensky says that” we were left by ourselves. Who is ready to go to war for us? Honestly, I don’t see anybody. Who is ready to give Ukraine a guarantee of NATO membership? Honestly, everybody is afraid”.
Although President Putin of Russia sent troops into Ukraine, he said that the military operation may end if Ukraine leaders are ready to negotiate and discuss neutral status for the country, among others but president Zelensky and his government didn’t think that Putin would send troops to Ukraine so they hesitated which created the situation we find ourselves in right now in respect to Ukraine.
But after Russia’s military destroyed Ukraine’s air defense systems and military infrastructure including taking over the control of a channel that supplied water to Crimea and the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, president Zelensky finally understood that maybe there was little chance for escape or Ukraine winning the war or getting any help from the US and the west in general as they only talked about sanctions while disagreeing on the level of sanctions to be imposed on Russia.
In his address on Friday which is the second day after Putin ordered troops into Ukraine, president Zelensky of Ukraine said he is open to talking about the possibility of a neutral status for Ukraine but insisted that his country need a third party guarantee.
” We aren’t afraid of Russia, we are not afraid to talk with Russia, talk about everything: security guarantee for our country and a neutral status but we are not in NATO now- what security guarantee will we have? Which countries will give them?”, Zelensky said as he added,” there should be talks to bring to an end to Russian military offensive”.
Before president Zelensky’s request for negotiation, the Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on Tuesday before Putin declared a special military operation in Ukraine that ” neutral status and deployment of offensive weapons was Putin’s redline and that the ball was in Keiv’s Court”.
Hopes started fading when Turkey failed to respond to Ukraine’s request of blacking Russian Navy ship’s transit to the Black Sea through Turkey. Turkey like any other country feared that blocking Russian Navy ships’ access to the Black Sea could result in a military response and Turkey like any other country in the world is not prepared to go to war with Russia even though its a NATO member state.
The coming days will surely give us a full picture of the war in Ukraine and its long-term consequences may be profound as we try our best to filter through all sorts of incoming news to make sure you get accurate news and understand what is going on.
