Putin recognizes the two Ukraine breakaway regions of Lugansk and Donetsk as independent states and Russia will deploy troops to defend them against Ukraine’s military. As expected, Putin has signed a decree accepting the two break-away regions of Ukraine” Lugansk and Donetsk” as independent states.
This follows a series of escalation in eastern Ukraine where Russia-backed separatists accused the Ukraine military of shelling civilians’ homes, the accusation the Ukraine government denied.
Things started getting out of control two weeks ago when some reports indicated that up to 1900 foreign fighters had entered eastern Ukraine and they were ready to fight. That’s when after a week we started hearing of ceasefire violations and then the leaders of Lugansk and Donetsk ordered the evacuation of young and old people from the region to Russia.
Ukrainian president accused Russia-backed separatists of escalation in eastern Ukraine while attending Munich security conference by citing some projectiles which hit the kindergarten injuring two people but Russia-backed separatists denied his claims.
Then Russian Duma passed a resolution calling on President Vladimir Putin to recognize the Independence of two Ukraine breakaway provinces of Lugansk and Donetsk and Putin had warned that if the escalation continues in eastern Ukraine, he will have no choice to defend those people from the two breakaway regions of Ukraine.
Yesterday, Russia’s FSB reported that a projectile from the Ukraine-held area hit and destroyed a building at the Russia-Ukraine border no injuries or deaths were reported but it showed how the situation was going out of control.
Then Ukraine military spokesperson Pavlo Kovalchuk told reporters that it was “fake news” and that the Ukrainian military had not carried out any operations in the Rostov region of the region.
Then the leaders of Lugansk and Donetsk asked Russia for help to fight against the Ukraine military. Putin then held a press conference and said that the situation in Donbas was critical as he promised to make his decision on television at night.
The whole world was watching, waiting to see what Putin will decide and when he signed a decree accepting Lugansk and Donetsk as independent states, the west went ballistic and promised sanctions on those two break-away regions but people in those regions were celebrating their Independence given to them by Russia.
Then Putin ordered the deployment of the Russian military in now independent states of Lugansk and Donetsk to maintain peace but many Western commentators said that Putin had invaded Ukraine which is half the truth since the west doesn’t recognize the two breakaway regions of Ukraine as independent states.
The moment president Vladimir Putin recognized the two breakaway regions of Lugansk and Donetsk as independent states, it was inevitable that Russian troops will move in to defend those regions’ Independence from the Ukrainian military.
Now as Russia deploys its troops (peacekeepers) in Lugansk and Donetsk, the Ukrainian government and its military face a dilemma” should Ukraine military stop the deployment of Russian troops in their controlled areas which will invite a strong reaction from Russia or just keep their bags and leave the two regions.”
The risk is so great that if the Ukrainian government and its military don’t handle the situation carefully, then we may see a bloody fight between the Russian military and Ukraine military and if they start fighting, then it’s hard to know where they may stop or go next.
For the US, president Joe Biden decided that the US military will not go to war with Russia over Ukraine but instead the US sent few weapons like anti-tank missiles and has offered mostly rhetoric support and sanctions against the two break away regions of Ukraine which are now recognized by Russia as independent states.
