As the US and its allies especially the UK continue to make alarms about 100,000 Russian troops massed upon its territory near a border with Ukraine, a country US and UK says will be under attack any moment from now from Russia, has created a security crisis in Europe forcing many European leaders to have a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin to try and find out what is Russia’s intentions and try to reduce tensions that may lead to war.
If tensions in Europe continue and we end up in a war, the existence of Europe will be threatened which is why many leaders are trying their best to make sure nothing like that happens by visiting Kyiv and Moscow to speak to both leaders and reduce tensions.
The tensions in Europe today have more to do with the US mindset and behaviors in Europe. US has deemed it necessary to confront Russia now using Ukraine to either leave it weakened or make peace with Russia in a deal that would help ensure the security of Europe hence helping the US to remove attention from Europe to Asia where the future lies with China becoming strong by the day.
US has put attention in Europe to first solve the question of Russia which the US thinks is a declining power and poses a threat to US interests in the short term than China which needs a long term strategy or plan if the US is to have any chance of winning or maintaining its influence in Asia and around the world.
President Putin of Russia has realized this and has decided to play along with US plans but by showing strength hence the deployment of thousands of troops near a border with Ukraine and in Belarus for training in order to gain advantages in negations with the US about the future security architecture of Europe.
President Putin today told the French president Emmanuel Macron that France has been playing a big role in maintaining security and peace in Europe citing its help during the Georgia crisis in 2008 and the Ukraine crisis in 2014 as he tries to send a message to the US that the security of Europe can only be ensured by countries in the region but not outsiders.
He also talked about the increase in trade volume between Russia and France even though it had started declining recently due to the Covid-19 pandemic and sanctions. In the last 24 years, the exports of goods from France to Russia have increased by 5.89% from 1.65 billion dollars to 6.52 billion dollars while exports of Russia to France had increased to 4.65 billion dollars as of 2019.
From the beginning at the end of the cold war, the US has been trying very hard to make sure that Russia doesn’t integrate with Europe both economically and security-wise as it would have led to the disbandment of NATO which is a US security architecture in Europe and also threatens its economic interests in Europe.
President Putin of Russia has been talking about this for years about how the collective west neglected Russia and took it as an enemy even though Russia tried everything to integrate with the west by even adapting its political system which is democracy and economic system which is capitalism.
But because the US never wanted Russia to join the collective west, to begin with since it was a threat to its economic and security interests in Europe if all countries integrated all together as one.
There would be no enemy to fight hence NATO which has been a backbone of US security would disappear and Russia would supply Europe with endless energy to support economic development as Europe supplied Russia with the much-needed technology to develop its industries and economy which would threaten US economic interests as there would be no need for Europe to turn to the US for economic development.
The US wanted a weak undeveloped Russia economically but with nuclear weapons as an enemy of Europe to guarantee the survival of NATO with fewer costs and also use Russia as a gas station dependent on the west for energy sales and limited capital in form of loans but it never expected that president Vladimir Putin would be able to quickly organize Russia to regain its place in the world as a strong country capable of calling out and fighting for its own interests.
As the US fights to remain the sole superpower, it has increasingly found itself challenged by both Russia and China hence a need to remove those two obstacles.
The problem is that Russia has modernized its military to be able to fight any war with anybody which is a challenge to the US and short of causing a war between Russia and Ukraine, the US has found no country or few countries in Europe willing to contain Russia economically and that’s why we are seeing Ukraine crisis where the US hope to push Russia into invading Ukraine in order to trigger sanctions that would destroy the Russian economy hence reduce its military capabilities without a need to fight Russia.
Although this is being played in Europe, the real target is China. With the Ukraine crisis, the US hopes to achieve 5 strategic goals;(1) increase NATO strength while discouraging the formation of European military, (2) Weaken Russia by destroying its economy hence reducing its military power, (3) Get EU on board in its Geopolitical contest with China ( 4) preserve US supremacy and give assurance to its allies (5) preserve the dollar hegemony as Russia is starting the d-dollarisation of its economy.
These five geostrategic goals will be explained in the next article about the cause of the crisis in Ukraine.
