Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi accused the US of trying to impose its definition of democracy on others and of using it to promote the independence of Taiwan.
“The US claims it does not support Taiwanese independence yet it provides Taiwanese independence forces on international stage loudly and clearly”, Wang Yi said while meeting with his Hungarian counterpart Peter Szijjarto on Thursday.
“This only goes to show its words are not to be trusted”, he continued.
The US under joe Biden administration has invited over 110 countries US considers to be democratic to attend US president Joe Biden’s summit for Democracy in December and Hungary wasn’t invited making it the only European Union member state left out and China was also not invited but Taiwan was invited although China takes the island to be its own territory.
The US says that the virtual meeting will be a forum for democratic governments, civil society, and the private sector to put forward concrete plans to promote human rights, fight corruption and fend off authoritarianism.
Under the leadership of prime minister Viktor Orban, a man who is determined to reform the EU and his right-wing Fidesz party, Hungary has banned homosexuality among minors which has led to criticism as an erosion of human rights.
Wang Yi the Chinese foreign minister said that whether a country is democratic should be judged by its people, not for some foreign country to point fingers and make arbitrary judgements which means the definition of democracy shouldn’t be left to be decided by a few countries which are the minority in the world.
In a move that has angered China, the US recently has moved to boost ties with Taiwan with lawmakers arriving in Taipei the capital city of Taiwan late on Tuesday to have talks with Taiwanese president Tsai-ing- wen.
Although China had made it clear to Joe Biden during a virtual summit that Taiwan is non-negotiable, the US has continued to use Taiwan to try and blackmail China which has only increased tensions in the Taiwan Strait.
The world is much divided on which country is a true democracy because even US’s democratic credentials are debatable and the same can be said of its allies like France and Australia which have been crashing protestors of recent during yellow vest protests in France and anti-lockdown protests in Australia.
The same can be said of the UK which introduced new laws against protests while giving UK police more powers to use against protestors.
We shall wait and see what will come from the so-called summit for democracy since it’s not only dividing the world into two blocks which is dangerous and counterproductive and also appears to be waste of time at time when the world needs to talk with one voice and collaborate inorder to be able to stand to challenges of 21st century.
