President Vladimir Putin’s recognition of the two break away regions of Lugansk and Donetsk has went Western countries led by US, UK and EU go ballistic with condemnation while promising sanctions. Joe Biden announced that he was sanctioning the two break away regions of Lugansk and Donetsk which Putin recognised as independent states.

While in UN security council meeting called by Ukraine to discuss the rapidly unfolding situation in eastern Ukraine, US ambassador to UN security council Linda Thomas-Greenfield called the deployment of Russian peace keepers to the two break away regions of Lugansk and Donetsk as” nonsense”.

I think the west is starting to see that sometimes their unilateral policies have long term consequences because they have been recognizing small states like Kosovo, said nothing about Israel annexation of Golan heights, they are in despite with China over Taiwan Independence and they have deployed troops in Syrian Kurdish controlled regions against opposition from Syrian government.
