The second phase of the expansion project for the Haikou Meilan International Airport in Haikou, capital of southern China’s Hainan province will be put into operation on December 2, 2021.
The second-phase expansion project is expected to better serve Hainan’s development as a free trade port with a comprehensive modern transportation system, enhance the province’s connectivity with countries along Belt and Road and boost tourism on the resort island.
Belt and Road initiative is a global infrastructure development strategy adopted by the Chinese government in 2013 to invest in more than 70 countries and international organizations promoting economic development and inter-regional connectivity from China through Central Asia to Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Its the most ambitious infrastructure project ever undertaken in human history.
The total investment of the project is about 17.8 billion yuan with the newest 4F flight built including a 3600-meter runway that can take off and land A380, the world’s largest passenger aircraft.

After completion, Haikou Meilan airport will realize a dual-runway operation that can guarantee a maximum annual passenger throughput of 45 million passengers and an annual cargo and mail throughput of 600,000.
The newly built T2 Terminalarea is about 296,000 sqm focusing on improving the support capacity of international routes, providing conditions for the landing of fifth and seventh flight rights, and ensuring the annual throughput of international passengers of 8-10 million.
The positioning of the aviation super hub of Meilan phase II has realized efficient and convenient transfers by various transportation modes such ad aviation, high-speed rail, and high ways.
New roads and bridges are 14 km long, the construction area of the ground transportation center and parking building is about 170000 sqm with the addition of a new parking area and reserved tunnels and platforms for the subway.
