A video posted on Twitter showed Hindu far right mob heckle a Muslim girl wearing hijab at college in Karnataka state in southern India which caused outrage and led thousands of students to go on streets to protest against the ban on Muslim headcarves.
Muskan Khan was surrounded by men wearing saffron scarves as she arrived at her college in mandya, the viral video showed as she confronted the protesters, many of whom she said were outsiders.
According to Muslim students protesting, the ban on headcarves is an attack on their faith enshrined in secular Indian constitution. The ban on hijab has seen Hindu far right mob try to prevent Muslim girls wearing hijab from entering college which caused communal tension.
” I was just there to submit my assignment, that’s why I entered the college. They were not allowing me to go inside because I was wearing the burqu”, Khan said.
The attacks on Muslims in Karnataka State in southern India has increased fear among Muslims and other minority groups because of increased nationalists of Hindu led government in India.
Tensions have been running high for years between Muslims and Hindu nationalists in India but have of recent increased after the election of Modi as primer minister of India. Modi is supported by Hindu nationalists who want to make India a Hindu state by expelling out Muslims from the country.
