US president signed executive order creating possibility of splitting 7 billion dollars in frozen Afghanistan funds held in US, potentially allocating part of the country as humanitarian assistance while while keeping another half to give to the victims of families of 9/11 attacks.
According to executive order signed by Joe Biden, 3.5 billion dollars in frozen funds will remain in US waiting for the judgement from Court about the request by the victims of families of 9/11 and the rest will be given to Afghan People who are suffering from the worst drought in decades.
According to state department, the order signed makes sure that the allocated money is given to Afghan People out of the reach of the Taliban who took over the Afghanistan government when US and forces left the country last year in July in hurry as the Taliban advanced.
According to the Taliban spokesperson Muhammad Naeen ” the theft and seizure of frozen funds by US represents the lowest level of human and moral decoy of a country and a nation.”
US failed to recognize the Taliban government in Afghanistan after US and NATO forces were kicked out of the country and has designated the Taliban as terrorist organization, withholding all Afghanistan funds in US even though people in Afghanistan are facing the worst humanitarian crisis in decades with 2 million people on verge of starvation to death.
According to US official, it will take time to unfreeze Afghan funds due to legal process even though Joe Biden signed executive order to release the funds. He also questioned whether the unfrozen funds can help in solving the humanitarian crisis facing Afghanistan where more than 2 million people face starvation to death.
The signed executive order by Joe Biden come at time when government faced a court order deadline to position itself on pending attempts by 9/11 families to seize the Afghan funds.
The Taliban took over the Afghanistan government when about 75% of people depended on foreign aid which was cut creating humanitarian crisis. According to UN, about 96% of Afghanistan People could fall in poverty as millions of people remain on verge of famine in the country.
People who are protesting have accused US whom they think is the richest and the powerful country in the world for stealing from the poor people of Afghanistan.
US government has been urged to unfreeze Afghan funds and also provide humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan by China, Russia, Iran, Pakistan and the UN but the US has refused saying that the Taliban may get hold of the money.
Sofar central Asian countries, China and middle eastern countries have taken humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan but its not enough as long as US blockade continue against the Taliban.
