Recently US approved a 100 million dollars support contract with Taiwan aimed to boosting the island’s missile defense systems as it is increasingly facing pressure from China.
The US state department announced the engineering and maintenance agreement on Monday. This angered China which is sharply critical of any US arms sales to Taiwan, and called on the US to revoke the deal and stop any military interaction with Taiwan.
” US arms sales to Taiwan seriously undermines China’s sovereignty and security interests and seriously damages China-US relations and peace and stability in the Taiwan strait”, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said.
Zhao Lijian lashed out at Taiwan’s DPP authority over its potential purchase of arms from the United States of America, saying that such provocative actions would only push Taiwan towards a disaster.
China regards Taiwan as a break way province which must be reunited with the mainland China either by peaceful means or the use of force. China has in recent years increased its patrol of airspace a round Taiwan which has increased tensions with US.
The support agreement approved by Joe Biden administration is meant to help Taiwan maintain its existing air defense missile systems and the advanced American made patriot missile defense system Taiwan is acquiring.
As geopolitical contest increase between China and the US, Taiwan is increasingly also becoming a battle ground for the two super powers. China has been warning that US support for authorities in Taiwan may embolden them and declare Independence which will led to war since China can’t accept an independent Taiwan.
